Drywall & Plaster Crack Repair in Columbia, MO — done so well you can't find the repair
Mid-Missouri sits on clay-heavy soil that swells in a wet spring and shrinks in an August drought. Add humid summers, dry forced-air winters and the seasonal movement of framing lumber, and every house in Boone County moves a little each year. Drywall shows that movement as cracks — diagonal cracks off the corners of doors and windows, vertical cracks at inside corners, straight cracks along ceiling seams, and "stair-step" cracks where a tape joint let go.
The reason most crack repairs fail is that somebody filled the crack with spackle or caulk and painted over it. The crack is a symptom of a joint that has lost its bond, and a surface fill has nothing to hold on to. We open the crack up, remove any loose tape and compound, re-tape the joint with paper tape, and float it out wide with three coats so the repair has the strength to ride out the next seasonal shift without telegraphing back through.
The Cracks We Fix in Columbia Homes
After a season of jobs across Columbia, these are the cracks we see over and over:
- Settling cracks over doors and windows — The diagonal crack running from the corner of a door frame or window toward the ceiling. Very common in the 1990s–2000s subdivisions in south Columbia and the newer builds out east.
- Inside corner cracks — A vertical crack where two walls meet, or where a wall meets the ceiling. Usually the corner tape was never fully embedded, or the framing shrank.
- Ceiling seam and truss-uplift cracks — A straight crack along a ceiling joint, or a gap opening where the ceiling meets the wall in winter and closing in summer — classic truss uplift in homes with roof trusses.
- Tape-joint failures and bubbling tape — Tape that has lifted, bubbled or peeled — often from a rushed original finish. We remove it and re-tape rather than mud over the failure.
- Plaster cracks in older homes — Cracks in lath-and-plaster walls in the Old Southwest, Benton-Stephens, West Broadway and East Campus areas get plaster-specific repair — see our plaster repair page.
- Cracks that came back after a previous repair — If somebody filled it and painted it and it reopened, that's the most common call we get. We do the repair properly so it holds.
A note on foundations: most drywall cracks are cosmetic and follow normal seasonal movement. Cracks wider than about a quarter inch, cracks that keep growing, doors that won't latch or floors that slope can point to foundation movement, and we'll tell you honestly if what we see looks like more than a drywall problem.

How We Repair a Drywall Crack
A crack repair that lasts has to rebuild the joint, not just hide the line.
Step 1: Open it up
We V-out the crack with a utility knife, remove any loose or bubbled tape and compound, and check whether the drywall behind it is still fastened to the framing. If a screw or nail has let go, we add fasteners.
Step 2: Re-tape and float
Paper tape gets embedded in a bed of compound over the joint. Then two more coats, each feathered wider than the last — usually 10 to 14 inches total — so the transition is invisible and the repair has real strength.
Step 3: Sand, texture, done
Sand smooth, match the existing texture, and leave it ready for paint. On ceilings with truss uplift we may recommend a flexible corner detail so the seasonal gap stops showing.
What Crack Repair Costs in Columbia, MO
Most drywall crack repairs in Columbia run $150–$450 depending on the length of the crack, whether it's on a wall or ceiling, and the texture. Several cracks in one room are usually done together for less than booking each separately. Plaster cracks in older homes run a little higher because the repair has to bridge the plaster and the lath — see the plaster page.
Every quote is free and flat-rate, given before any work starts. If the crack turns out to be a symptom of something structural, we tell you rather than patching over it.
