How We Repair a Drywall Hole

Step 1: Cut, back-block and patch
We cut the damaged area into a clean square, install a wood backer behind the wall so the new drywall has something to fasten to, and screw in a piece of new drywall flush with the surface. No stick-on mesh patches, no shortcuts — every patch is structurally solid.
Step 2: Tape and three coats of mud
We tape the seams with paper tape (stronger than mesh for this), apply a base coat of joint compound, feather it wide and let it dry. Then a second coat, wider still. Then a third skim coat. Each coat is fully dry before the next goes on — this is what keeps the patch from telegraphing through paint later.
Step 3: Sand smooth and texture-match
Once the final coat is dry we sand smooth, dust the area and apply the matching texture — knockdown, orange peel, smooth, or whatever your existing wall has. The texture is the make-or-break step: get it wrong and the patch shows forever. We get it right.
